As the organizers of this festival we are very proud and pleased with the outcome. Despite some mishaps and uncertainties everything eventually worked out: all films could be shown, all invited guests arrived in time, and almost all showings found some lively reception.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The absolute frontrunners, which sold out the theater, were the wonderful movie <strong>\u201eSoleils\u201c <\/strong>by our patron this year Dani Kouyat\u00e9 from Burkina Faso, the refugee drama <strong>\u201eHope\u201c<\/strong> by Boris Lojkine, as well as <strong>\u201eFinding Fela\u201c<\/strong> by Alex Gibney, a fascinating portrait of the founder of Afrobeat from Nigeria.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-bottom: none;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"border-bottom: medium none; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2858\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image004.png\" alt=\"image004\" width=\"336\" height=\"190\" \/><br \/>\nHope<\/td>\n<td style=\"border-bottom: medium none; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2859\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image006.png\" alt=\"image006\" width=\"305\" height=\"190\" \/><br \/>\nFinding Fela<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>\u201eSoleils\u201c<\/strong> impressed with its calm narrative style. <strong>Dani <\/strong><strong>Kouyat\u00e9<\/strong>, himself a member of a griot family, is continuing the traditional form of narration, as he said, through the contemporary medium of film. Rarely has anyone dug so deeply into the tradition and philosophy of an African people in an African film. The revelation of the declaration of human rights in the large West African Mandingo empire 500 years prior to the declaration of human rights in Europe was particularly impressive. Thereby the film emphasizes that Africa is not a dark continent devoid of history, as even great European thinkers have claimed.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-bottom: none;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"border-bottom: medium none; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image008-e1448457625423.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2860\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image008-e1448457625423.png\" alt=\"image008\" width=\"352\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nSoleils<\/td>\n<td style=\"border-bottom: medium none; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2861\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image010.png\" alt=\"image010\" width=\"274\" height=\"190\" \/><br \/>\nDani Kouyat\u00e9<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The responses to the film <strong>\u201eMiners shot down\u201c<\/strong> were particularly positive. It presented political as well as individual facets of the shootings of peacefully demonstrating miners in South Africa. The following discussion with the British lawyer <strong>James Nichol<\/strong> showed once more how this strike that was put down violently through the ruling ANC party under President Jacob Zuma has permanently changed the political landscape of South Africa.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image012.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2862 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image012.png\" alt=\"image012\" width=\"464\" height=\"314\" \/><\/a>In general, this year the documentaries left the deepest impact. They are authentic films that acutely describe the conditions of life in African regions. Diarra<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>We had invited two filmmakers: Filipe Henriques from Guinea-Bissau with his film <strong>\u201eO Espinho da Rosa\u201c<\/strong> and Cheik Fantamady Camara from Guinea with <strong>\u201eM<\/strong><strong>o<\/strong><strong>rbayassa &#8211; Le serment de Koumba\u201c<\/strong>. The discussion after Henriques&#8217; unusual and upsetting film provided the audience with some insight and guidance about the idea of the film and its realization. The story of the film originates in his grandfather&#8217;s telling of stories at night. Henriques\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 combined this story with accounts of incest. These elements were transported into a modern form, a mix between a love story, science fiction and a crime thriller. \u201e<strong>Morbayassa\u201c<\/strong> is a typical story of many African women who break free from coercive conditions and are searching for their own identity.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-bottom: none;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"border-bottom: medium none; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2866\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image020.png\" alt=\"image020\" width=\"294\" height=\"200\" \/><br \/>\nFilipe Henriques<\/td>\n<td style=\"border-bottom: medium none; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2867\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image022.png\" alt=\"image022\" width=\"261\" height=\"200\" \/><br \/>\nHans-J\u00f6rg Heinrich und Cheick F. Camara<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>From the two programs of short movies the feature film <strong>\u201eTwaaga\u201c<\/strong> by Cedric Ido from Burkina Faso stood out. This film ties together the fantasy world of the boy Manu, in which he is a superhero, with the tragic reality of the Burkinabe \u201esuperhero\u201c Thomas Sankara; both were killed at the end.<\/p>\n<p>More highlights of the festival were our two central themes.<\/p>\n<p>In particular the documentary <strong>\u201eBoy Saloum\u201c<\/strong> by director Audrey Gallet and the subsequent remarks on the protest movement &#8220;<strong>Y&#8217;en a marre&#8221;<\/strong> by our guest, the Senegalese rapper and political activist <strong>Thiat<\/strong> prompted repeated hurricanes of applause from the audience. Because of those long lasting protests a third and unconstitutional term of the then sitting Senegalese president Abdoulaye Wade could be prevented.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-bottom: none;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"border-bottom: medium none; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2868\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image024.png\" alt=\"image024\" width=\"275\" height=\"190\" \/><br \/>\nThiat<\/td>\n<td style=\"border-bottom: medium none; text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image026.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2869\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image026.png\" alt=\"image026\" width=\"274\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nDiskussion im Kino<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>The second film <strong>\u201eRevolution mit blo\u00dfen H\u00e4nden\u201c<\/strong> showed how a year ago the citizens&#8217; movement &#8220;<strong>B\u00fcrgerbesen&#8221;<\/strong> literally swept President Blaise Compaor\u00e9, who also attempted a third unconstitutional term, out of office in Burkina Faso.<\/p>\n<p>For our second thematic focus &#8220;<strong>Queer Africa&#8221;<\/strong> on the situation of lesbians, gays, and transgender people in Africa we had invited <strong>Imam Muhsin Hendricks<\/strong> and youth adviser <strong>Wisaal Abrahams<\/strong> of the South African organization &#8220;<strong>The Inner Circle&#8221;<\/strong> as well as <strong>Uta Schwenke<\/strong> of the &#8220;<strong>LSVD&#8221;<\/strong> and the &#8220;<strong>Hirschfeld Eddy Foundation&#8221;<\/strong> to join in discussion. This exchange turned into a very personal interview with both South African guests about their lives, their \u201ecoming out,\u201c and the reactions of their Muslim community, friends, and acquaintances. They gave a lively report on their organization &#8220;<strong>The Inner Circle&#8221;<\/strong> and the expansion of its activities to other African countries and as far as Asia and Europe. Uta Schwenke introduced the dedicated work of the &#8220;<strong>LSVD&#8221;<\/strong> in Germany and Africa.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image028.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2870 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image028.png\" alt=\"image028\" width=\"460\" height=\"249\" \/><\/a>We were pleased to collaborate with Uta Reuster-Jahn who introduced films from Tanzania at <strong>Hamburg University&#8217;s &#8220;Asian African Institut&#8221;<\/strong> that focused on problems of translating Swahili into German.<\/p>\n<p>We were also able to welcome two tenth-grade classes to a screening of <strong>\u201eMaking of \u2013 Kamikaze\u201c<\/strong> by Tunisian producer Nouri Bouzid. The film illustrates how young people in dire personal situations can be drawn into the circles of fundamentalist recruiters and be politically abused. On that topic we had an exciting discussion with <strong>Mahmut Erdem<\/strong> who, as a lawyer, counsels families whose children join ISIS and a student of Islamic studies, <strong>Iftikar Malik<\/strong> who is also in contact with such families.<\/p>\n<p>On the last Saturday of the festival we danced and celebrated the completion of a successful fourth African film fest with a potpourri of musical classics.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image030.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2871 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image030.png\" alt=\"image030\" width=\"265\" height=\"149\" \/><\/a>Now we are starting to search for new exciting film productions from the diverse African continent for <strong>November 2016<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image032.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2872 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.augen-blicke-afrika.de\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/image032.png\" alt=\"image032\" width=\"365\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a>Bis dahin bleibt dran, lasst die Filme nachwirken und macht neue Begegnungen mit Afrika.<\/p>\n<table style=\"border-bottom: none;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align: center;
